Women's Basketball Play Host to Troy Tuesday

The Alabama State women's basketball team will play host to intra-state school Troy Tuesday, December 15, at 6 p.m. in Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

Alabama State currently holds a 15-11 lead in the series between the two schools.  The Trojans have won the last four of five contests.  ASU last won against Troy (81-71) at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Dec. 12 in 2000.  There had been an 11-year gap between the teams last match up from 2000-2011.

"I am interested to see how we will match up with Troy this season", said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "We have not done well in the past few years against them either losing by 10 or more points.  They have a more experienced team and they have been really putting a beating on some of the other teams that they have played.  We just started back playing Troy a couple of years ago and just have not been able to match up with them."

ASU enters the game with an overall record of 1-5.  It's been 10 days since the Lady Hornets last played, so they should be well rested and ready to play.

"Although we have not played a game, we still have been able to put in some valuable work," Freeman-Jackson said of her team.  "I have really been focusing on the offensive side of the ball and I think with the rest and work we have put in we should be ready to go."

Junior Britney Wright is averaging 12.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. She is leading the charge on both sides of the basket.  As senior Jasmine "JP" Peeples is averaging 2.7 blocks, 7.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.  As a team, the Lady Hornets are averaging 51.8 points per contest and giving up 63.2.  They are shooting under 34 percent overall and over 26 percent from around the arc.

Troy enters the game with a 3-3 overall record.  The team is led in scoring by senior Ashley Beverly Kelley, who is averaging 17.8 points per game.  Junior Kristen Emerson along with freshman Amahni Upshaw leads the Trojans in rebounding, pulling down 5.2 rebounds per game.

"We know that it's going to be a task playing against Troy, said Freeman-Jackson.  Troy's style of play is almost similar to Samford's, and we play them Thursday so this should prepare us for that game.  Troy's style of playing is an international type of ball, they love to penetrate and kick the ball out, as well as shooting the 3-ball which they do well.  They are a good-sized team that knows how to get up and down the court and we know we are going to have to stay in front of them. We also know that we will have our work cut out for us."
