Lady Hornets Work On Offense In Preparation For Savannah State

With only a short turnaround, the Alabama State University women's basketball team prepares to play Savannah State, Saturday, December 5 at 4 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

After falling 47-43 in their Wednesday night game to South Alabama, the Lady Hornets 1-4 focuses on the offensive side of the ball in their single day of practice Friday afternoon.

"We are not trying to do too much today. We want to make sure we understand the concepts of what we are trying to run on offense," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson "I think that was the biggest thing we had problems with in the game yesterday. We have to do a better job of scoring baskets."

Savannah State comes into the game with a 1-4 record and averaging 49.6 points per game, however; this team will challenge the Lady Hornets' defense as they explode on offense.

Against Columbia College, Savannah State erupted for 101 points making 41-of-71 shots (57.7%), 54 of those points coming from inside the paint.

Savannah State's offense charge is steered by Keyata Hendrix's 11.8 per game and the sharpshooter Deyja Brown who is converting 33% of her 3-point shots.

"We are playing pretty good defense, anytime you keep a team to 47 points that tells you we can defend," said Freeman-Jackson.

The Lady Hornets' are working to find continuity on the offensive end with starting point guard Damya Toney out for the season.

"Our starting point guard is out with an ACL tear and she will have surgery next week, so we have to get more productivity from our guards," stated Freeman-Jackson.

ASU's Elisiah Jones and Raven Russell impressed the coaches off the bench against South Alabama and should expect a lot of good things from their guards in this next game.

"Two of our freshmen players (Jones and Russell) got in the game and did pretty well at the guard spot," said Coach Freeman-Jackson, "I thought Elisiah came in the game giving us some great minutes when Shamyiah Smith was struggling. Also, Raven Russell made many great things happen on both sides of the ball when she got in the game."
