DELAND, Fla. – Junior pitcher
Maddie Phelps worked four straight scoreless innings to start and the Lady Hornets put runners on base, but did not get the big hit in as Alabama State lost 11-0 to Colgate on Sunday in the consolation game of the Stetson Invitational at Patricia Wilson Field.Â
Â
The game set up as a pitcher's duel as both Phelps and the Raiders' Brigit Leuter spinned zeros across the opening four frames with both scattering hits and working their way out of trouble.Â
Â
ASU (3-15) had several chances to break it open as the team left 12 runners on base including leaving the bases loaded without a run in both the second and third innings.Â
Â
The Lady Hornets batted 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Â
Phelps (2-7) was cruising until the fifth inning when she allowed all five of her runs and five of her nine hits. She had three strikeouts and issued two walks. Â
Â
The Raiders (1-3) put up a five-run seventh on a two-run double and a three-run home run. Â
Â
The Lady Hornets just could not catch a break.
Â
In the seventh inning,
Alexis Johnson came up and knocked what appeared to be a solo home run over the left-center field fence, but was later called out due to hitting out of order when ASU failed to notify the umpire of a re-entry into the lineup.Â
Â
ASU sophomore right fielder
Brittney Wilson upped her batting average to .406 on the season by batting 4-for-8 in the tournament with her third home run of the season including 3-for-3Â on Sunday.
Â
Sophomore third baseman
Kendall Core went 1-for-3 with a walk and extended her reached base streak to 15 games. In the tourney, she batted 2-for-7 with two walks.Â
Â
Wilson and Core were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Â
Next, the Lady Hornets will travel north to Birmingham to take part in the Tiny Laster Invitational beginning Friday at 5 p.m. against Savannah State.Â
Â
ASU will continue play there Saturday against Morgan State at 9 a.m. and Faulkner at 1:30 p.m. before finishing at Tennessee State on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Â
