Six Reach Double Digits as ASU Picks Up Road Win at Grambling State

Alabama State had six players reach double digits as they picked up a 78-46 road win over Grambling State.  The win breaks a two-game losing streak for the Hornets and keeps them in second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) race with one game left on the schedule.

"We wanted to come out and try to establish ourselves early since we've been playing from behind quite a bit and what we asked our guys to do was to pick up from where we left off the last six minutes of the PV (Prairie View) game where we played with a lot of energy," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "I thought tonight the guys gave a great effort in trying to do the things we asked them to do and was able to get some points and get some stops."

"What I was most happy about was being able to get some playing time for the guys that have been practicing all year but has not had a chance to get a lot of playing time and they were able to get some minutes tonight."

ASU (17-9/13-4 SWAC) shot a blistering 66 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 52 percent from the field.

Wendell Lewis, DeMarcus Robinson and Jamel Waters all finished with 12 points each while Bobby Brown scored 11 and Tony Armstrong and Luther Page added 10 each.

The Hornets did a great job of passing the ball around in the game and finished with a season-high 25 assists on their 31 made baskets.  Waters and Steve Rogers led the way with seven assists each.

Page led ASU's rebounding efforts with seven boards while Brown and Maurice Strong grabbed five each.  The Hornets forced 11 turnovers and had five steals with Rogers grabbing two of those and Strong having a game-high four blocked shots.

"We talked about moving the ball around and trying to get the ball inside and making open shots," Jackson said.  "In the second half a lot of shots fell for us and I think the lead went up once we put the reserves in so it was good to see them make some shots and it was just a good effort all around for this team."

ASU's defense held the Tigers (2-25/0-17 SWAC)  to 31 percent shooting for the game.  Remond Brown scored 11 points to lead GSU and Richard Freeman added 10.  A'Torri Shines was GSU's leading scorer coming into the game averaging over 13 points per game.  ASU's defense held him to three points on three free throws, as he was 0-for-nine from the field.

ASU held a 34-21 halftime lead even though neither team shot the ball extremely well.  Wendell Lewis led the scoring for ASU with 12 points.  Brown added five as the Hornets shot 39 percent from the field.

For GSU, Wiley and Brown had six points each as GSU shot 28 percent from the field.  The Tigers out rebounded the Hornets 22-19 with Richard Freeman's six leading the way.

"We needed a win to get back into the "W" column and to feel a little better about ourselves considering we lost our last two ball games," Jackson said.

The Hornets will end the regular season with a road game at Jackson State. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday March 7 and will be played in Jackson.  The game can be heard live on bamastatesports.com.
