Lady Hornets fall late to Alabama A&M

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Eriel Lawson scored on a double steal with pinch runner Sierra Smith drawing a throw down to second base in the top of the seventh inning as Alabama A&M came away with the winning margin for a 4-3 win at Alabama State on Sunday afternoon.

Ariel Smith and Viridiana Ramos each hit solo home runs to lead the Lady Bulldogs (16-21 overall, 6-7 SWAC).

The Lady Hornets (14-29 overall, 8-6 SWAC) did rally in the game, however, when ASU put together a three-run third inning behind a triple by Valerie Centeno and a RBI double by Jenna Mae Thorne.

Aleesa Yanez hit a hard hit ball in the hole between short and third.

The ball was cut off by the Lady Bulldogs' third baseman and bobbled away as Kendall Core and Thorne both came around to score.

The homer by Ariel Smith tied it at 3 in the sixth before the winning score on the double steal in the seventh.

Chelsea King pitched four innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits, struck out two and walked one.

Melissa Christmann (5-11) took the loss after coming in relief and allowing two runs in two and two third innings pitched.  She struck out three.

Senior pitcher Anisa Britt (10-8) picked up the victory for A&M with a complete game, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits.  She struck out one and walked none.

Alabama State will return to action on Friday at 6 p.m. to open a three-game series when it hosts SWAC opponent Alcorn State.
