FLAGSTAFF, AZ  – The Alabama State women's soccer team was up against quite a few obstacles when it prepared to take on host Northern Arizona.
Â
There were lightning delays, occasional downpours, cool temperatures in the 50's and the unique environment of playing at around 7,000 feet in elevation.Â
It was anything, but a typical match in September for ASU.Â
The host Lumberjacks seemed to feel right at home.Â
ASU showed some competitive fire early by matching possession time in the first part of the half, but Northern Arizona was able to drive forward for a 6-0 win in a match that was shortened with 16:03 remaining after heavy rains began to come down at Max Spilsbury Field on Friday night.Â
"We had to battle the elements with lightning and rain," said Alabama State head women's soccer coach
Jodie Smith.
"I thought we played well early, carried the play for the first 25 minutes or so and had to battle the elevation. It is different facing the elevation. We tired down the stretch.
We're not focusing as much as we can. Little things haunt us right now. If we make a mistake, we are paying for it dearly. I thought our work rate was good. Our desire to compete was very good.   But as the game wore on, the more we tired."
Haley Wingender scored twice for the Lumberjacks (1-3) and four others scored as NAU held a commanding 22-3 shots advantage for the match.
ASU (0-3-1) had two of their shots on target.Â
Aaliyah Lewis had a look in the opening half while
Kayla Edwards got an opportunity after halftime, but they were saved by keepers Natalie Gilbertson and Meghan Dickmann.
In goal, ASU freshman
Gianna Guyot made eight saves including six in the first half.Â
The Lady Hornets will be back in action Sunday at Grand Canyon University at 3 p.m. central / 1 p.m. local time.Â
