MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State University men's basketball team will look to win their second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory Monday when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7:30 p.m.
Â
The Hornets (6-9/1-2) are coming off their first conference win, a 75-74 overtime affair over Mississippi Valley State Saturday evening.
Â
That game was the Hornets second consecutive overtime game of the year and it was not settled until a
Jamel Waters basket with 2.5 seconds left in the game helped the Hornets to their first conference victory.
Â
Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-14/0-2) is looking for their first conference win of the season after falling 85-70 at Alabama A&M Saturday. The Golden Lions and Hornets have had some epic battles in the past and that is what is expected in Monday's matchup.
Â
"The one thing I know about Pine Bluff is they will play hard every second of the game," Head Coach
Lewis Jackson said. "They are a lot like us in that they have had several close games that could have been wins for them. We know not to take this team lightly and we are not good enough to take anyone likely."
Â
Jamel Waters started Saturday's game being honored for becoming the 28
th player in ASU history to score 1,000 career points. He ended the night with an offensive rebound and put back basket to give ASU a come-from-behind 75-74 win.
Â
Waters is averaging almost 15 points per game to lead the Hornets.Â
Tony Armstrong averages 11.1 points per game and
Bobby Brown averages 10.
Â
Armstrong leads the Hornets in rebounding averaging 6.7 per game. He has helped shore up the Hornets rebounding woes from early in the season. He is getting plenty of help from Brown who averages 5.9 rebounds per game and
Corvon Butler averages 5.7.
Â
UAPB's Ghiavonni Robinson averages 10.6 points per game to lead the Golden Lions. He also is the team leader in assists with 34 and in steals with 26.
Â
JoVaughn Love averages right at 10 points per game and is the team's leading rebounder at 3.9 per game.
