Tucker Hits Buzzer Beater to Give ASU Five Game Win Streak

For the first time in a couple of years, Alabama State defeated Alcorn at the buzzer to give ASU their fifth straight SWAC win Monday night at the Davey L. Whitney Arena.

ASU was down by as many as 14 points going into halftime, but found a surge to take a 52-51 win on a Kayla Tucker buzzer beater. Tucker was 0-4 prior to taking the final shot of the game.

"This was an excellent finish for us," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "Kayla had been missing shots all game long. For her to step up and make such a big shot was absolutely awesome. We put in two shooters. When Danielle Cark missed the shot, Daniele Ewert got the rebound and kicked out to Kayla Tucker, who nailed the three."

Alabama State (7-9, 5-2 SWAC) shot 55 percent from the field, but it took a strong defensive effort down the stretch - holding Alcorn State to 28 percent from the field goal - to give the Lady Hornets the victory.

ASU not only held Alcorn State to under 30 percent shooting, but they held Norianna Haynes, Alcorn's leading scorer, to only four points. Haynes has been averaging 21 points per game.

With a final tie coming at 37-37 with 1:36 left in the third quarter, ASU went on a run behind the hot shooting of Britney Wright, Ashanti Spencer and Durriya Shields-Sampson. Between the three Lady Hornets, they scored 21 points in the third quarter to put the Lady Hornets back into the game.

Wright led all scorers with 15 points, while also leading both teams in rebounding with 10. Sampson had 10 points, while Spencer had 11.

The Lady Hornets will return home for a showdown as they host Texas Southern for Black Out weekend and Elementary Honor Roll Night.
