MONTGOMERY – Alabama State University's men's basketball team will be home for its next two games as the Hornets continue to try and move up in the conference standings.  The Hornets will host Southern Saturday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. while Alcorn State will visit Montgomery Monday, Feb. 22 for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

ASU (9-15/4-8) has won three of its past four games and will look to continue that momentum.  ASU fell to both teams in close fashion on the road with Southern (18-8/10-3) defeating ASU 73-69 and falling at Alcorn State (12-12/10-3) 77-72 in Lorman.

The Hornets enter the game tied with Alabama A&M for sixth in the conference, but have the tie break advantage over the Bulldogs.  ASU is also only a half game out of fifth.  With six games to play before the tournament, the Hornets are looking to move up in the standings as much as possible.

It has definitely been a season of "what ifs" for the Hornets, especially in conference play.  The Hornets of lost eight conference games and those losses have come by a total of 36 points, or just 4.5 points per loss.

Jamel Waters is the offensive leader for ASU averaging 15.5 points per game, fourth in the SWAC.  He is listed among the league leaders in eight of the 13 categories the SWAC keeps and his 42 percent three point shooting and 2.5 three point field goals made per game are still at the top of the conference.

Tony Armstrong is the other Hornets averaging in double digits.  He averages 12.1 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per outing.  He would be listed among the league leaders in each category but has not played enough games to qualify as a league leader.

Corvon Butler (9.5) and Torloft Thomas (8.9) are also team leaders in scoring and Butler's 6.0 rebounds per game has him among league leaders.

The Hornets will face two of the hottest teams in the league.  Southern has won 10 of its last 11 games while Alcorn State has won four straight and nine of its past 10.

Southern (18-8/10-3) has three double-digit scorers led by Adrian Rodgers 16.5 points per game average.  He is the second leading scorer in the SWAC.

Trelun Banks averages 12.5 and Jared Sam averages 10.1 and 6.6 rebounds.

While the Braves of Alcorn State will face Alabama A&M Saturday evening, they will bring a dangerous team into Montgomery for Monday's match up.

Octavius Brown leads Alcorn averaging 13 points per game and teammate Tamarcio Wilson averages 12.1.  Brown leads Alcorn and is fourth in the conference averaging 7.4 rebounds per game and Marquis Vance averages 5.3.

Saturday's game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip and Monday's contest begins at 7:30 p.m.  Both games can be heard on the ASU Hornets Sports Radio Network at bamastatesports.com.
