ASU (3-9) got off to a good start in the first inning when catcher
Aleesa Yanez smoked a two-run single to right that scored both
Jenna Mae Thorne and
Valerie Centeno.
Â
However, the Retrievers (2-7) got back into it with a two-run home run by Kaelin Jackson in the third to tie it at 2-2.
Â
UMBC took the lead for good with a huge six-run inning in the fourth highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of first baseman Carly Lesko.Â
Â
Alabama State was unable to catch up, but scored two more in the fifth on a RBI double by Centeno and a RBI single by
Kendall Core.Â
Â
UMBC's Danielle O'Neal put the game out of reach in the seventh with a three-run home run in the seventh.
Â
ASU starter
Maddie Phelps (1-4) took the loss, but only three of the eight runs that she allowed were earned. She had three strikeouts and three free passes.Â
