Hornets Extend Winning Streak To Four

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas  - The Alabama State men's basketball team extended its winning streak to four games with 73-68 win at Prairie View Saturday night at the William Nicks Building.

The starters were the strength of the effort for the Hornets (12-15 overall, 7-8 SWAC), who won for the sixth time in seven February contests. Jamel Waters scored 15 points, Torloft Thomas 14, Corvon Butler 11, Tony Armstrong 10, and Terrance Leflore nine. Butler added a game-high eight rebounds as Alabama State out-rebounded Prairie View by a 38-35 margin.

There were three times and four lead changes in the game, with all four lead changes coming in less than two minutes early in the second half. A Butler layup gave the Hornets the lead for good and sparked a 21-2 run over a seven+ minute stretch that flipped a 42-41 deficit into a 62-44 lead with 9:10 remaining.

Prairie View (5-22, 5-10) cut the lead to four, 67-63, with 2:22 remaining.  However, a layup by Armstrong with just under two minutes remaining sparked a 6-0 run that ended with an Armstrong dunk with 45 seconds remaining.

Alabama State made 10 three-pointers, tied for the second-highest total of the season. Waters and Thomas each hit three, while LeFlore, Bobby Brown, Nick Barnes and Steve Rogers each hit one.

The Hornets return to action Monday at 8 p.m. at Texas Southern in a live nationally televised game on ESPNU. The game will also be broadcast on the ASU Hornet Sports Network with the pregame show beginning at 7:45 p.m.
