Women's Basketball Close Out Texas Road Swing at TSU on ESPNU

The Alabama State University women's basketball team will close out the road part of the season against Texas Southern, Monday night at the HPE Arena at 4 p.m. on ESPNU.

The Lady Hornets enter Monday's contest at 13-11 overall, 11-4 in SWAC action and will look to close out their road competition on a good note.

Texas Southern (17-8, 13-2 SWAC) has won their last three games to include the 72-41 win over Alabama A&M. Earlier this season, Alabama State defeated TSU 57-51 at the Dome.

"We would like to end this game, at least, on a good note," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "We have lost the last two out of three games and we want to make sure that we go into this game on a positive
note and finish out this road trip on the winning side."

The Texas Southern Tigers are led in scoring by Kianna Vines, who not only leads her team, but also leads the conference averaging 17.6 ppg.  She also leads TSU in rebounding averaging 7.8 rpg.  Texas Southern is currently in the first spot of the conference.  As a team, the Tigers average 60.4 ppg.

"Vines has been playing well along with her other teammates," said Freeman-Jackson.  "We know that she can score, we were able to contain her in the last game we played against them.  We still have our work cut out for us and we will have to play defense and score points."

Britney Wright scored a game high of 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win over TSU.  Teammate Ashanti Spencer scored 14 points. In the loss to Prairie View on Saturday, ASU lost a 63-60 heartbreaker and will look to regain their momentum in the last three regular season contests.  Wright led the team in rebounding, grabbing 11 rebounds. As a team, ASU averages 62.9 points per game

"As a team, we are marking our average and we know that Britney and the other ladies are going to do what they need to do, but we need everybody to make baskets and play defense.  Spencer has come in and did some things for us and played a lot more aggressive ball, and she's scoring when we need her to. But we can't just score and not play defense.  We have to play on both ends of the court," Freeman-Jackson said of her Lady Hornets.
