Hornets Fall to Southern at SWAC Tourney

HOUSTON – Jamel Waters scored 20 points, grabbed five rebounds and had a game-high nine assists, but it was not enough as Alabama State fell to Southern 83-63 in the quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament.

"Tough ball game tonight," Head Coach Lewis Jackson said.  "Southern came out and had live legs and they really got after us.  They pushed the ball offensively and I thought they really made some tough shots there especially in the first half, a lot of tough shots with a hand in their face."

"We came out and rushed our offense a little bit and when our shots weren't falling they kept making shots.  They were ready to play us tonight and we didn't have enough guys to step up and play."

Tony Armstrong, who missed the last two games with an injury, came off the bench to join Waters in double digits with 13.  He also had six rebounds.

The Hornets struggled for most of the game shooting the ball finishing the game shooting 33 percent from the field.  ASU did manage to hit seven three point field goals, but attempted 21 for 33 percent.

While the Hornets were unable to get to the free throw line until late in the game, they did hit 16 of their 20 attempts for 80 percent.

Terrance LeFlore and Bobby Brown each had eight points while Brown tied Armstrong for team-high honors with six rebounds.

The hot-shooting Jags shot 49 percent from the field and that includes shooting 54 percent in the second half.  Adrian Rodgers had a game-high 22 points for Southern while Trelun Banks and Jared Sam each had 13.

Southern hit five of their 13 three point field goals for 39 percent and hit 20 of their 29 free throws for 69 percent.

The Jags took a 40-26 lead into the locker room at halftime behind the Rodgers 12 points and Banks eight.  Southern also was able to shoot 15 free throws compared to only two for the Hornets, where they made 11.

The Jags shot 45 percent in the opening half and hit three of their eight three point attempts for 38 percent.  They were also able to out rebound the Hornets 28-19.

Waters led the Hornets with eight points and Armstrong scored six.  ASU only shot 26 percent from the field and hit four of their 11 three point field goals for 36 percent.

ASU ends its season at 14-17 and it was the final game for seniors Waters, Brown, Robert Ojeah and Chidozie Omile.
