Women's Basketball Wins Back-to-Back SWAC Championships

For the first time in the history of Alabama State's women's basketball program the Lady Hornets pulled out an outstanding back-to-back SWAC Championship (55-51) win over Southern on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Hornets placed a collective team effort as last year's Tournament MVP Britney Wright and all                                                                                  tournament team members Jasmine Peeples and Daniele Ewert repeated these honors once again.

"This is a spectacular moment for us," said Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "These ladies came in here today and took care of business and this is a great feeling.  I am very proud of how the whole team played and the accomplishment that we have achieved."

ASU opened up with a quick three shot by Wright and from that point ASU kept the lead.  Even when it appeared that SU was close to tying the game Alabama State would counter act and continue their momentum.

"We did a good job of closing Southern out and keeping our pace," Freeman-Jackson said.  "Although we sent them to the free throw line way to many times we kept them contained otherwise."

Britney scored a game high of 17 points and 11 rebounds between both teams, giving her the 13th double –double of the season.  Ewert tacked on 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal.   Peeples had nine points, five rebounds and five blocks to add to the win.

"Once again the three headed monster as I call them worked inside and out and made things happened," Freeman-Jackson said.  "I am very proud of JP (Jasmine Peeples), Britney and Ewert they all did an outstanding job on both ends of the court."

ASU scored 12 points off of turnovers and received 17 points from the bench.  They were 38.8 percent from the field hitting 6-16 from the around the arc.

Brianna Green of Southern led her team with 16 points, her teammate Cortnei Purnell had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Next up for the Lady Hornets will be the big dance.  They will find out on Monday evening on ESPN for a special bracket announcement starting at 7 p.m. eastern time.
