ASU drops two at Belmont


NASHVILLE, TN – The Alabama State softball team lost both games of their doubleheader with Belmont on Saturday at E.S. Rose Park.
 
Game 1: Belmont 1, Alabama State 0
Senior right hander Maddie Phelps gave the Lady Hornets a valiant effort with six strong innings, in which she allowed just one run on five hits.
 
The Grass Valley, Calif. native added six more strikeouts to her conference-leading total of 49 punch outs on the season. 
 
Phelps also leads the SWAC in innings pitched (76) and wins with five. 
 
The difference came in the fourth inning when Bruins first baseman Jordan Daly led off the inning with a triple to right field on a 3-2 pitch.
 
Daly would come around to score on a RBI single by junior Amy Zeronian.
 
Laura Aguilar had a solid day at the dish for the Lady Hornets as the junior batted 2-for-4 with a double.
 
Game 2: Belmont 8, Alabama State 0 (5 innings)
The Bruins homered three times as Melissa Christmann was saddled with the loss to fall to 3-6 on the season.
 
The Lady Hornets only collected two hits in the game with one from Jenna Mae Thorne and another from Perry Hindi. 
 
Up next
The Lady Hornets will return home to open a three-game series and the conference portion of the schedule with Prairie View A&M on Friday at 6 p.m.  
 
The teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
 
It will be Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend as all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the games.
