MONTGOMERY, AL – For all the hits that leadoff batter
Laura Aguilar has had this season, none turned into as big of a run-producing day in Wednesday's 8-7 game one victory against Mercer at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
Â
Aguilar continued her torrid hitting display with a 3-for-4 performance and a career-high five RBIs including a key two-run double in the second inning and followed with a three-run, bases clearing triple in the fifth to help ASU recapture the lead.
Â
Maddie Phelps (9-7) came on in relief and tossed three innings that were just enough to get it done as ASU held off a late rally by the Bears, who scored two runs in the seventh to make it tight.Â
Â
Earlier in the game,
Aleesa Yanez went yard with a solo home run to center for her third of the season while
Jenna Mae Thorne added a RBI single and
Alexia Boggess drove in another run as the Lady Hornets held off Mercer to grab their longest winning streak (four) under coach
Chris Steiner-Wilcoxson.Â
Â
Alabama State (15-19) dropped game two, 16-5 in six innings, after fighting back with a five-run fifth inning.
Â
Thorne clubbed a grand slam, her third home run of the season, to cut the deficit to 10-5.Â
Â
Thorne finished 2-for-3 with four RBI in game two.Â
Â
But ASU pitchers combined to pile up seven walks and hit two batters to set up big innings for the Bears (17-20).
Â
Up next
Alabama State travels to Lorman, Miss. to take on SWAC Eastern rival Alcorn State for a three-game conference series beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
