IRONDALE, AL – The Alabama State softball team's bats came alive and the Lady Hornets produced a 14-hit collective effort in run ruling Montevallo 9-1 in six innings Friday evening to open play in the Tiny Laster Classic at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex.

ASU (5-12) got off to the quick start, scoring a run in the first and adding three more in the second inning.
Â
The Lady Hornets scored in every inning, but the third and ended it in the sixth after
Brittney Wilson ran full speed ahead with a leadoff triple to center field.Â
Â
Wilson would score after a sharply hit single by
Laura Aguilar back up the middle.Â
Â
And, the game concluded when
Valerie Centeno doubled to deep right to put the eight-run rule into effect.
Â
The bats were active all night as Aguilar batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a double.
Wilson wound up with a perfect 3-for-3 night with three runs scored and a triple.

Charlene Castro and
Jenna Mae Thorne each added two hits.Â
Â
In the fifth, Castro smoked a RBI double to center and
Carly Evans hit a deep fly to right to pick up a sacrifice fly RBI.
Â
In the fourth, Wilson singled and came around to score with some heads up base running on a Centeno RBI ground out.Â
Â
Thorne ripped a liner up the middle to plate two more and pushed the lead to 4-0.
Â
Earlier in the game, Aguilar added a RBI single down the left field line to make it 2-0.Â
Â
Kendall Core roped a RBI single back up the middle to put ASU on top 1-0 in the first.Â
Â
Maddie Phelps (3-4) pitched four scoreless innings and allowed just two hits and
Melissa Christmann came on in relief and went two innings and allowed one run on three hits.Â

Up nextThe Lady Hornets will continue play in the Tiny Laster Classic beginning at 12:30 p.m. in a two-game set against Savannah State.
