Lady Hornets Clinch Top Seed in SWAC Tourney with Season Finale Win

The big three of Britney Wright, Daniele Ewert and Jasmine Peeples propelled Alabama State women's basketball to a 69-60 home victory over Grambling State.

Ewert led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-12 (75%) shooting while both Wright (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Peeples (14 points, 16 rebounds) earned double-doubles. This was Wright's 12th double-double of the season. Peeples swatted a game-high five blocks to eclipse Zagailea Norris as the new all-time leader in Alabama State history with 198 career blocked shots.

With this win, Alabama State secured a share of the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season championship with Southern and Texas Southern. ASU ended Grambling's six game winning streak.
 
The swarming defense of the Lady Hornets held the Lady Tigers to 24-of-64 (37.5%)  from the field while limiting the conference's top scoring team to just one player with double-digit scoring and below their season average (65.9 points per-game).
 
ASU outscored Grambling 41-28 in the second half, predominantly contributed to a fourth quarter offensive output making 10-of-12 (83.3%) shots from the field including a lone three-pointer of the quarter and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the free-throw line. 
 
The Lady Hornets did a good job of sharing the ball finishing with 20 assists. Ashanti Spencer finished with a career and game-high of five assists to go along with seven points while Ewert followed with four assists.
 
ASU also outrebounded Grambling by astounding 48-28 and connected on 25-of-54 (46.3%) shots from the field.
 
After trailing 16-12 in the first quarter, Grambling attacked early and often as ASU endured a second quarter that seen three lead changes. The Lady Hornets trailed 32-28 going into half time.
 
ASU finished the regular season with a 16-11 overall record, a 14-4 in conference play and will enter the SWAC tournament with a three- game winning streak.
 
Alabama State will now prepare for the SWAC Tournament, which will see them enter tournament play as the tourney's first seed.  They open play Wednesday March 9th at 6:00 p.m. The SWAC will soon release the total bracket the Lady Hornets will find out their opponent.
