IRONDALE, AL – A fielding error opened up the door for a four-run inning and the Alabama State softball team left seven runners on base as the Lady Hornets were nipped 4-3 by Montevallo Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Tiny Laster Classic played at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex.

ASU (7-13) nearly completed the comeback.

Trailing 4-0, Alabama State got three runs back in the third on a
Kendall Core RBI double and a two-run home run by
Charlene Castro.
Â
ASU had a couple of big opportunities to take the lead, but left two runners on base in both the fourth and sixth innings.

The Lady Hornets nearly tied it at 4-4 when
Carly Evans singled and
Kaylee Davis entered to pinch run for her.

Davis stole second, and attempted to score on a single up the middle from
Laura Aguilar.
Â
Montevallo centerfielder Kelsey Vining made an accurate throw home to get Davis out at home.Â

Jocelyn Rivera pitched a complete game and earned the win for the Falcons (10-13).
Â
Charlene Castro (0-4) took the loss for the Hornets, but allowed just one earned run in four innings of work.Â

Maddie Phelps came on in relief and tossed two more scoreless innings to lower her season ERA to 3.25.Â

Up nextThe Lady Hornets will return home for a four-game home stand beginning Tuesday with a doubleheader scheduled against Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Preceding first pitch, there will be a special Military Appreciation Day honoring those who serve at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery.Â
