MONTGOMERY, AL ā The balls were jumping off the bats of the Alabama State softball team, but the Lady Hornets lost a barnburner in their home finale against Mississippi Valley State 12-10 Sunday afternoon at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

The Lady Hornets (23-23 overall, 14-1 SWAC) lost for just the first time this season against a SWAC opponent.

ASU has outscored SWAC opponents 118-31 thus far and still holds the best overall mark in the conference.

Texas Southern holds the next best record at 14-2 in the SWAC.Ā

Kendall Core batted 4-for-5 including her sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot, and added a double with four RBI to lead Alabama State.Ā

Alabama State poured out 17 hits on the day, but had to try to rally for most of the day.

After taking an initial 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Devilettes (13-25 overall, 9-9 SWAC) came back with four runs in the top of the second and added three more in the third to take a 7-3 lead.Ā

Trailing 10-4 in the fourth, Core sent a three-run home run to center to cut the deficit to 10-7.

Laura Aguilar's RBI single scored
Brittney Wilson to get it as close as 10-8, but MVSU's Ane Pahulu drove in two insurance runs in the sixth to make it 12-8.

Aleesa Yanez and Wilson added RBI singles in the sixth to make it interesting, but were unable to score thereafter.Ā
