Wright and Ewert lead Alabama State to fifth straight win

Duo combines for 46 points on the night

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Britney Wright and Daniele Ewert combined to lead Alabama State University to a come-from-behind 72-54 victory over Alcorn State University in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action Saturday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The victory is the fifth consecutive victory for the Lady Hornets, dating back to January 4.

"Coming into tonight's game we knew that is was going to be a challenge," Alabama State head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "They put us in a situation we don't see often, they play a lot of guards and we knew going into the game it was going to be a match-up problem.

"But at the same time we feel like we are the best when have Britney and Daniele, with our big in. We wanted them to have to make changes in how they could they could stop us."

Wright and Ewert combined to score 46 of the team's 72 points, including 21 combined in the fourth quarter. Wright finished with a game-high 28 points, finishing 10-of-21 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Ewert finished with 18 points that included a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter that put the game away.

"I started off slow and knew I needed to pick it up," Wright said. "Playing teams like this is always a challenge because we are more of an original-type team. We knew what we had to do, we just had to calm down and be disciplined on both ends of the floor. We had to work hard, and I just wanted to make sure I stepped up and stay calm."

Alabama State (6-10, 5-1 SWAC) finished the night shooting 46.4 (26-of-56) percent from the floor and 27.3 (3-of-11) percent from beyond the arc, with all three of the team's three-pointers coming from Ewert.

"This year I have had a rough time from beyond the arc and the free throw line," Ewert said. "I just had to settle in and make shots when I had a chance. Once I hit a big shot, my adrenaline goes up and I am able to get going and play the game I know how to play."

On a night full of runs, it was an Alabama State run in the fourth quarter that put the game away. The Lady Hornets, who trailed by five entering the quarter, quickly took control of the game when they scored the first 11 points of the final stanza to take the lead for good. Alabama State used a pair of three-pointers from Ewert to seal the victory, before finishing the 20-4 run late in the quarter.

"Anytime you have two All-SWAC performers on your team it helps," Jackson said. "They know what it takes in order to win. I thought Britney was grinding and powering the ball at the end, and Ewert stepped up and made some crucial three-pointers. So anytime these two ladies are in double figures and do the things I ask them to, our chances are better and we will have a lot of success."

The two teams traded baskets for much of the first half, with each going on big runs to gain separation only to have the other come back with a run of their own. After Alabama State was able to gain their first lead since tip at 9-7 on a Victoria Harvey with 4:56 to play in the opening quarter, Alcorn State went on the first run of the game of the 8-2 variety to take a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Alcorn State opened the second quarter with five of the first seven points to extend their lead to 21-15 before Ewert hit a three-pointer to trim the lead to 21-18 with 6:12 to play in the opening half. The basket ignited a 9-2 run to take a one-point lead at 24-23, with the run being highlighted by Ewert with four points and Wright with four of her own. The Lady Hornets kept the lead until the final seconds of the half when Alexus Freeman hit a baseline runner to give Alcorn State a 26-24 lead at the intermission.

The third quarter was much the same as the first two as each team went on runs to take the lead from one another. Alabama State went on 8-2 run over the first three minutes to take a 35-34 lead with 7:19 to play in the quarter, but it was Alcorn State with an 8-2 run of their own to end the quarter and take a 47-42 lead into the fourth.

Alcorn State (4-14, 4-3 SWAC) was led by Brianna Luton with 17 points, while Alexus Freeman added 14 and Henrietta Wells 13 in the loss.

Alabama State returns to action Monday night hosting Southern University at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
