MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A pair of five-game winning streaks will be on the line Monday night when Alabama State University hosts Southern University in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game Monday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
Alabama State (6-10, 5-1 SWAC) enters the contest fresh off a 72-54 victory over Alcorn State on Saturday, a game in which
Britney Wright and
Daniele Ewert combined for 46 points for the Lady Hornets as they outscored Alcorn State 30-7 in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Southern (8-7, 6-1 SWAC) enters the game following a 66-54 victory over Alabama A&M on the road Saturday.
The meeting will be the first of two this season between the schools, and the two have faced five of the same opponents during SWAC play – Grambling State, Jackson State, Alabama A&M, Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff – with Alabama State winning four of the five games against those opponents. Meanwhile, Southern has claimed five victories against those opponents
Wright continues to lead the Lady Hornets in scoring this season, and is among the best in the conference at 14.9 points per game following her 28-point outburst against Alcorn State. She also leads the team and is near the top of the conference in rebounding at 7.1 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 81.1 (77-of-95) percent from the free throw line.
Ewert is also in double figures this season, averaging 10.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for Alabama State. She is currently shooting 79.2 (38-of48) percent from the free throw line this season, and she is coming off her best performance from beyond the arc this season – a 3-for-5 performance against Alcorn State on Saturday.
The Lady Hornets enter the night averaging 65.8 points per game in conference play, and have allowed opponents to score just 58.3 in conference games through six games this season. Meanwhile, Southern comes in averaging 66.9 and allowing 60.1 in conference games this season with a pair of players in double figures – Briana Green (15.0 ppg) and Courtnei Purnell (11.7 ppg).
