HOUSTON, Texas – The Alabama State University women's basketball team will look to bounce back after falling to Texas Southern on Saturday night, as they travel to Prairie View A&M University for a Monday night road matchup in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.
Alabama State (7-11, 6-2 SWAC) enters the game after falling to Texas Southern, which put the two teams into a tie for first place in the conference standings. In the Saturday night contest,
Britney Wright led the Lady Hornets 21 points and four steals, while
Damya Toney finished the night with 10 points including a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to give the Lady Hornets a chance to win the game.
The Lady Hornets now turn their attention to Prairie View A&M in conference action as they look to get back into the win column and keep pace with Texas Southern at the top of the SWAC standings.
The last loss for Alabama State came on January 2 where they dropped a contest to Grambling State, before rattling off six consecutive conference victories over the span of the next 21 days.
"We just have to bounce back," Alabama State head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "We are tied for first place in the conference, and we can't go to Prairie View worried about our last game. Prairie View lost a couple of games in row, we just have to make sure if they are down that the stay down. We have to try to get out of here with a split."
Prairie View A&M (8-12, 3-5 SWAC) enters the game following a 71-47 victory over Alabama A&M in which Alexus Parker had 19 points. The Lady Panthers recorded their seventh victory at home this season (7-1), with their only loss coming at the hands of Texas Southern back on January 7. The Lady Panthers faced a grueling non-conference schedule that included powers Texas Tech, DePaul and Texas A&M among others.
"Prairie View had a great non-conference run," Jackson said. "They beat some quality mid-level schools, so they know how to play. They have just been struggling here lately. We just have to make sure that when we go there, we have to do the things we know how to do to be successful."
Success starts with senior
Britney Wright, last week's co-SWAC Player of the Week, who averages 16.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game – both near the top of the conference in each category. During conference play, the senior is averaging 21.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, and she has recorded six 20-plus point outings in her last seven games.
Daniele Ewert is also in double figures in scoring for the Lady Hornets, averaging 10.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game; while in conference play, she is averaging 10.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game through eight games. The Lady Hornets will also turn to their defense where they are allowing just 59 points per game in conference play, while holding opponents to just 35.1 (149-of-424) percent from the floor and 23.5 (24-of-102) percent from beyond the arc.
The game is set to tip off at 5:30 pm.
