PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas |
Inma Martinez scored the game-winning just two minutes into the second half helping top-seeded Alabama State advance to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) semifinals with a hard-fought 2-1 victory Thursday morning.
"As the saying goes win and advance," Alabama State head coach
Jodie Smith said. "I am pleased with how we dealt with adversity, getting behind early and kept playing. We just have to rest up now for a quick turn around for tomorrow's semifinals."
Alcorn State (4-10), the eighth-seed in the tournament, scored first in the match when Yaira Guardado took a pass from Rita Okoro in the 21st minute for the 1-0 Lady Braves lead.
The Lady Hornets were able to tie the match just before half when
Shyann Cordova knocked home a penalty kick, knotting the match at 1-all and setting the stage for Martinez in the second half.
Teaggan Ilela crossed the ball from the right side where
Lexi Krieger had an opportunity to knock the goal home; instead the rebound went to Martinez who beat the Alcorn State keeper low to her left for the winner.
Alabama State (11-7) will face either fourth-seeded Prairie View A&M or fifth-seeded Texas Southern Friday at 3 pm.
