JACKSON, Miss. | Alabama State opens conference play Monday on the road, facing Jackson State at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
Alabama State (2-9) comes into the game off of a 61-50 win over Mobile back on December 21.
Kenya Pye and
Keimeshia Walker each scored 13 points to lead the Lady Hornets to a victory before the holiday break, while
Victoria Harvey recorded a game-high 11 rebounds.
Walker leads the Lady Hornets in points, averaging 12.7 per game, while
Tatyana Calhoun averages 4.2 rebounds per contest.
Jackson State (4-4) enters the New Year after losing to Memphis, 64-53, on December 19. Derica Wiggins leads the Lady Tigers at 16.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while Christina Ellis is averaging 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
The meeting between Alabama State and Jackson State will be the 76th in the series, with Jackson State holding a 39-36 advantage since the first meeting back in 1982. The last time the two met was in March of last year when the Lady Hornets dropped a 68-62 decision in the regular season finale.
Following the Monday night contest, Alabama State will remain on the road as they travel to Grambling (La.) to face the Lady Tigers of Grambling State Wednesday night.
Grambling State (3-8) looks to bounce back after a 79-62 loss to Arkansas on Thursday night. Ariel Williams scored a career-high 16 points in the loss on 50 (6-of-12) percent shooting. The Lady Tigers have three players averaging double figures, led by Deja McKinney with 12.4 points and Shakyla Hill with 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
The Lady Tigers lead the series against Alabama State 43-33, with the Lady Hornets ending a 10-game winning streak for Grambling last season with an 83-76 victory.
Tip is set for 5:30 pm for both games, with both being carried on the Hornet Sports Network with pregame beginning at 5:15 pm.
