Lady Hornets host Alabama A&M Saturday

Alabama State looks to sweep season series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University women's basketball team will look to keep pace with the top of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) this weekend, playing host to rival Alabama A&M University Saturday afternoon at 3 pm at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The meeting will be the second this season with Alabama State winning the first meeting 52-37 in Huntsville. The Lady Hornets were led in the game by Britney Wright with 22 points on the night, hitting all 10 of her free throws.
Alabama State (9-12, 8-3 SWAC) looks to sweep the season series for the first time since 2014-15, and for the third time in four years. They will also be looking to keep pace with Texas Southern (who leads the conference) and Grambling State (tied for second with ASU) in the SWAC standings, as the two teams go head-to-head on Saturday.

Wright continues to lead the Lady Hornets this season at 16.9 points and 6.9 rebounds, all while climbing the career chart at the school. The senior is currently fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1631 points, and trails Latricia McDole (1990-94) by just 16 points for third time heading into the game. She is also eighth on the all-time list in rebounding with 820 – just four behind seventh place.

The senior is not the only person making a move on the career chart for Alabama State, as fellow senior Daniele Ewert – averaging 10.8 points per game this season – is just 33 points from moving into 14th place all-time at the school in scoring as she trails her current coach, Freda Freeman-Jackson. Junior guard Shamyiah Smith needs just two assists to get to 200 for her career, as she sits in 10th place on the all-time list.

The Lady Hornets come into the contest averaging 65 points per game offensively, while allowing just 58.4 to their fellow conference teams. In conference play, Wright is averaging 20.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while Ewert is averaging 11.4 points per game.

In their last outing, the duo combined for 41 points in a 71-57 victory over Mississippi Valley State. Ziara Doe and Smith also scored in double figures for the Lady Hornets with 11 points each, while the team shot 87.5 (28-of-32) from the free throw line.
