BATON ROUGE, La. – The Alabama State University men's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Monday night as the Hornets visit Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game at the Southern University Mini Dome.
"It's going to be another tough ballgame," Alabama State head coach
Lewis Jackson said. "They (Southern) are going to come out ready to play. They got good players at all positions and we've got to play our game, which means getting out and running, and try to put some pressure on them from time to time. We've got to have guys who can make shots and play well down the stretch."
Alabama State (8-17 overall, 6-7 SWAC) enters having dropped its last game, 75-67, at Alcorn State. The Hornets rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit in the loss. Southern (13-14, 9-5) are coming into Monday night's contest having won four out of its last five, including a 77-64 victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday.
On Saturday against Alcorn State,
Rodney Simeon led four Alabama State players in double figures with 15 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
Torloft Thomas finished with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, while
Terrance LeFlore added 14 points and four rebounds.
Mikel Tyson tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Hornets shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the free-throw line.
Against Alabama A&M, Shawn Prudhomme led four Jaguar players in double figures with 20 points and seven rebounds. Chris Thomas added 15 points, while Jared Sam finished with 12 points and eight boards. Trelun Banks chipped in with 10 points as Southern shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the floor and 17-of-17 from the free-throw line.
The Hornets are seeking a season sweep of Southern.
In the previous matchup on Jan. 23, Alabama State defeated Southern, 79-65, on Jan. 23. In that contest, the Hornets built a 42-25 lead at the half and didn't look back.
Tony Armstrong paced four Hornet players in double figures as he finished with 17 points.
Reginald Gee and Simeon added 13 points, while Thomas chipped in with 12.
Amir Warnock led Alabama State in rebounds, registered 10, with seven coming on defensive end as the Hornets shot 31-of-59 from the field (52.5 percent).
Prudhomme led the Jaguars with 19 points, while Sam recorded 17 points as Southern shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55).
Alabama State returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb 20 in Baton Rouge, La., against Southern. In the previous matchup this season, the Hornets got 17 points from
Tony Armstrong in a 79-65 victory over the Jaguars on Jan. 23.
