Lady Hornets look for fourth consecutive victory

Britney Wright scored career-high 35 in victory earlier this season

BATON ROUGE, La. – There are just five games remaining in the regular season and the Alabama State University women's basketball team finds itself near the top of the conference standings as they prepare to face Southern University on the road Monday night.

Alabama State (11-12, 10-3 SWAC) finds itself alone in second place, just percentage points behind Grambling State in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season standings and one game ahead of Texas Southern. However, lingering just spots back in the standings is Monday's opponent – Southern with five conference losses.

The two teams met earlier this season, with senior Britney Wright scoring a career-high 35 points in the 75-70 Alabama State victory. Wright finished the night shooting 64.7 (11-of-17) percent shooting from the floor and 75 (3-of-4) percent from beyond the arc. She also finished the night a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Tatyana Calhoun finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Daniele Ewert added 10 points and five rebounds in the victory.

The game took place back in January when the Lady Hornets were in the midst of a six-game winning streak, and ironically they enter the Monday night contest on a three-game winning streak. The only other time Alabama State has won three consecutive games, they stretched that into the season-best six-game winning streak.

Wright enters the contest as the conference's leading scorer at 17.7 points per game and is near the top at 7.1 rebounds per game, all while scoring 20-plus points 12 times this season. In conference play, the senior is averaging over 20 points per game and she is just 38 points away from becoming the school's second all-time leading scorer. Ewert is the second-leading scorer for the Lady Hornets this season at 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, and is just one rebound away from her 500th career rebound.

Alabama State has five regular season games remaining in the regular season, with three of those games coming against the top four teams in the league – Southern, Texas Southern and Grambling State. With victories in all three games, the Lady Hornets would wrap up a home game in the SWAC Championship Tournament; while they could wrap it up with a pair of victories and some help.

Tip is set for 5:30 pm Monday night.
