NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Alabama State University softball team dropped a pair of games to Belmont University Saturday afternoon, falling in extra innings in the opener (5-4) and 2-0 in the nightcap.
In the opener, Alabama State (3-9) was held to just six hits, with
Laura Aguilar picking up a pair of hits including a double and a pair of runs scored.
Kendall Core had another big game at the plate, pounding out her fourth home run and ended the day with four runs batted in.
The Lady Hornets jumped out on top in the first inning when Aguilar led off the game with a single, followed by a one-out single by
Perry Hindi. Core drove both runners in with a three-run home run to right for the 3-0 lead. Alabama State added another run in the third when Core drove home Aguilar with a sacrifice fly for the 4-0 lead; however, Belmont came back and scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game at 4-all.
The Bruins were able to score the winning run in the eighth after a two-out single to left center.
Charlene Castro (0-1) suffered the loss out of the bullpen, going 2.1 innings and allowing just one run off of two hits while walking a pair.
In the nightcap, Alabama State was only able to get five baserunners on throughout the game – all by walk – as they were no-hit.
The Lady Hornets return to action Thursday night on the road at Mississippi State University. First pitch for the contest is scheduled for 6 pm, and the game can be seen on the SEC Network.
