Lady Hornets drop marathon contest to Loyola Chicago

Alabama State plays longest game of the season in the loss

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Loyola Chicago used a four-run 12th inning to remain undefeated as they beat Alabama State University in extra innings at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex Saturday night.

Alabama State (3-11) scored first in the game, getting on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Laura Aguilar drew a leadoff walk. After she stole second, the senior advanced to third on a throwing error and later scored on an RBI groundout by Kendall Core.

The Lady Hornets had other chances to go ahead in the contest after Loyola Chicago (12-0) tied the game in third, including in the ninth with two runners in scoring position but were unable to push them across.

After the Loyola Chicago loaded the bases in the 10th off Alabama State reliever Justine Jean, the Lady Hornets were able to get out of the inning as Perry Hindi threw out a runner at third who misread the ball in the dirt for the second out. The inning ended when another runner misread another ball in the dirt as Hindi threw her out at home.

They loaded the bases again in the 11th but were unable to score as Charlene Castro came on in relief. She induced a one-out pop-up, followed by a strikeout to end the inning. The Lady Hornets had their chance in the bottom of the inning when Therese Byrne got to third with no one out as Marina Clark reached on a bunt. However, a line drive by Aguilar ended up in a double play, and the Lady Hornets went scoreless in the inning.

Castro (0-4) suffered the loss in relief for Alabama State as she gave up four runs (one earned) off of three hits, while starter Vanessa Bradford received a no-decision while going nine-plus innings and allowing just one run off of eight hits.

Hindi finished with a pair of hits for the Lady Hornets, reaching base for the 12th consecutive game.
