MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University women's soccer team had its home opener spoiled on Tuesday night as Troy got two second-half goals in a 2-0 victory at the ASU Soccer Complex.
Â
"I am pleased with the effort," Alabama State head coach
Jodie Smith said. "The first half was really good. I think it was a tale of a team that was finishing their chances and us that had chances and just couldn't put them away. Overall I am really pleased and if we can really play than I think good things are in line for us. Right now it is time to regroup a bit and move on."
Â
After a scoreless first half, Troy grabbed a 1-0 lead as Haley Robinson's cross on the right side found the head of Qarli Stone for the goal in the 50th minute.
Â
The Trojans (1-2-0) picked up the second goal in the 62nd minute as Robinson again set up the goal as her cross to the near post was headed in by Julia Winter to extend the advantage to 2-0.
Â
Alabama State (0-3-0) had chances in the final 10 minutes, but Troy goalkeeper Katrine Jacobsen was sturdy in the net to help preserve the shutout victory.
Â
Turning Point
Despite losing the game, 2-0, the real turning point came in the second half.
Â
Alabama State controlled the first half and saw plenty of chances, including a strike by
Lexi Krieger in the 20th minute as she fought off a defender to put a shot on target.
Â
However, the Trojans came out of the second half with more energy and were able to get goals by Stone and Winter to pick up the win.
