Lady Hornets return home for pair of SWAC contests

Alabama State faces Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern beginning Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State returns home Saturday afternoon beginning with Prairie View A&M at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome, the first of two games in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) this week for the Lady Hornets.

Alabama State (4-14, 2-5 SWAC) enters the contest having lost consecutive games on the road, dropping their last game to Alcorn State 73-41 Monday night. Freshman Mya Millner recorded 12 points off the bench for the Lady Hornets, and Kayla Stephens recorded a career-high 11 rebounds and added three assists.
 
Keimeshia Walker leads the Lady Hornets in scoring, averaging 9.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Tatyana Calhoun averages 8.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, and leads the conference in shooting with a 67.3 (33-of-49) field goal percentage. She is also fifth in the conference in blocks at 0.9 per game.
 
Saturday's opponent, Prairie View A&M (6-12, 4-3 SWAC) is led by Shala Dobbins at 20.2 points and 3.6 assists per game, while Mariah Campbell is averaging 5.7 rebounds per game.
 
This will be the 71st meeting between Alabama State and Prairie View A&M, and the Lady Hornets hold a 41-29 overall series advantage. The teams last met on February 22 when the Lady Hornets defeated Prairie View 71-64.
 
Meanwhile, Texas Southern (10-8, 5-2 SWAC), Monday night's opponent, is led by Joyce Kennerson who leads the conference in scoring at 25.2 points per game. Texas Southern has won the last four conference games, claiming a 58-52 victory over Arkansas Pine-Bluff in which Kaitlyn Palmer and Kennerson scored 18 points each in the victory.
 
The game against Prairie View A&M tips at 3 pm and can be seen on the SWAC Digital Network, and it will also be carried on the Hornets Sports Network. Pregame on the Hornet Sports Network begins at 2:45 pm. The game on Monday against Texas Southern can be seen on the Hornets Sports Network, beginning at 5:15 pm.
