@BamaStateWBB falls to No. 10 South Carolina in home opener

Jayla Crawford led the Lady Hornets with 10 points

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Freshman Jayla Crawford was the first player to score in double figures for Alabama State this season, but it wasn't enough as the Alabama State women's basketball team fell to No. 10 South Carolina 94-38 on Sunday afternoon at Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
 
"It was an honor to have coach Dawn Staley and her program on our campus this year," head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. "The fans got to witness history and I hope my players learned from this."
 
Alabama State (0-2) received 10 points from Crawford and fellow freshman Ayana Emmanuel had seven points. Victoria Harvey chipped in six points and a posted team-high five rebounds.

South Carolina's (1-0) Te'a Cooper led all players on the floor with 17 points after connecting on 4-of-9 attempts. She was joined in double figures by teammates Bianca Jackson (13 points), Destanni Henderson (13) and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan (11).
 
The Gamecocks worked their way out to a 27-10 lead after the first 10 minutes and never looked back, leading by double-digits for the remainder of the contest. They shot 45.6 (31-of-68) percent from the floor, 40.0 (10-of-25) percent from beyond the arc and 71.0 (22-of-31) percent from the charity stripe.
 
South Carolina connected on three triples in the third quarter, running out their lead to 76-25 heading into the final quarter.
 
The Lady Hornets shot 26.7 (12-of-45) percent from the floor for the game, including 16.7 (2-of-12) from beyond the arc, however, shot 60.0 (12-of-20) percent from the free throw line.
 
Alabama State returns to action Thursday, November 15 when they host Samford. The game tips off at 6 pm at Dunn-Oliver Acadome, with pregame on the Hornets Sports Network beginning at 5:45 pm.
