MONTGOMERY, Ala. | A trio of freshmen outscored West Georgia en route to leading Alabama State to an 81-56 exhibition victory at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Friday night.
Ayana Emmanuel led Alabama State with 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor, while also hitting on 3-fo-4 shooting from beyond the arc. She was also 7-of-9 from the free throw line for the Lady Hornets who shot 62.5 (10-of-16) percent from the line in the game.
She was one of three freshmen in double figures, with
Jayla Crawford adding 21 in her first collegiate game. She finished 8-of-16 from the floor, with a pair of three-pointers. Crawford also hit on 3-of-5 from the free throw line, while also grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Taylor Aikerson poured in 18 off the bench, including 7-of-13 shooting from the floor.
Alabama State and West Georgia battled in the first quarter, as the Lady Hornets built a nine-point lead before West Georgia battled to pull within five. The two teams traded baskets in the second quarter, with Alabama State pulling out to a 36-28 halftime lead. However, the third quarter is where Alabama State did their damage as they outscored West Georgia 23-8 to pull away.
The Lady Hornets ended the night shooting 52.6 (30-of-57) percent from the floor and 50 (11-of-22) percent from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, West Georgia shot 35.8 (19-of-53) percent from the floor and 36.4 (4-of-11) percent from beyond the arc.
Alabama State returns to action November 7 on the road at Kentucky, before returning home to face South Carolina November 11 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
