Hornets and Hawkeyes will meet for the second consecutive year

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State and Iowa have combined for six consecutive victories in the early portion of the 2018-19 season, and the teams put their winning streaks on the line Wednesday when they meet at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Wednesday night.

Alabama State (2-2) has won back-to-back home games after dropping a pair of road games to open the season entering the game against the Hawkeyes. The Hornets have won their two games by an average of 39 points, including scoring a season-high 97 points against LaGrange and holding Birmingham-Southern nearly 50 points below their season average (44 points in victory).

Through four games, Reginald Gee leads Alabama State in scoring at 16.5 points per game and has scored in double figures in three of the four games; including a pair of 20-plus point nights. The junior, a second team All-SWAC selection in the preseason, is closing in on 1,000 career points as he now stands at 814 through four games this season. Meanwhile, Jacoby Ross is right behind Gee in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in two of the four games this season – both 20-plus point efforts.

Preseason All-SWAC selection Branden Johnson is averaging nearly a double-double this season, after grabbing his first of the season against Birmingham-Southern. Johnson is averaging 8.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while AJ Farrar who grabbed his first double-double last week is averaging 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Meanwhile, Iowa (4-0) enters the contest after winning their first four games since 2013-14 to open the season. The 24th-ranked Hawkeyes are one of six Big Ten teams ranked in this week's AP Top 25, and have won 53 of its 57 non-conference home games dating back to 2012.

Tyler Cook leads Iowa in scoring through four games this season at 16.0 points per game and is averaging 8.0 rebounds per game, while Luke Garza is averaging 14.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game from his post position. Meanwhile, Jordan Bohannon is averaging 12 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game for the Hawkeyes, with Cook and Garza earning 2K Empire Classic All-Tournament team honors this past week.
