Ross scores 25, @BamaStateMBB comes up short at South Dakota State

South Dakota State extended longest home winning streak to 22

BROOKINGS, S.D. | Jacoby Ross led Alabama State with 25 points Thursday night at Frost Arena, but it wasn't enough as South Dakota State extended the nation's longest home winning streak with a 78-61 non-conference victory.

Ross led Alabama State (0-2) with nine field goals, with seven of those coming from beyond the arc. He finished the night 7-of-15 from three-point range for the Hornets, while also grabbing a pair of rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists. Branden Johnson added 10 points on a perfect night from the floor, connecting on all five of his field goals.

The Hornets shot 41.5 (22-of-53) percent from the floor for the game. Including 51.9 (14-of-27) percent from the floor in the first half. They also shot 40.9 (9-of-22) percent from beyond the arc, but shot just 47.1 (8-of-17) percent from the free throw line.

Mike Daum recorded his 34th career double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds for South Dakota State (2-0), who extended the nation's home winning streak to 22 games. He was one of four players in double figures for the Jackrabbits, and was joined by Skyler Flatten with 17 points and Tevin King with 12 points and five assists. Matt Dentlinger added 10 points and seven rebounds for South Dakota State, who shot 45.3 (24-of-53) percent from the floor and 31.8 (7-of-22) percent from beyond the arc.

They also shot 92 (23-of-25) percent from the free throw line, while also winning the rebounding battle 41-26.

Alabama State got down early but battled their way back into the contest late in the first half, however, after a charge was initially called the play was reversed. The Hornets found themselves down by nine at that point and were in the midst of a run when the call happened, and it led to an 8-2 run by the Jackrabbits to end the half.

The lead grew to as many as 24 in the second half with 14:45 to play, but the Hornets locked down South Dakota State and held them without a basket for 6:32 in the final half to pull to within 11. However, a three-pointer by Flatten pushed the lead back to 14 and South Dakota State was able to push the lead back to 17 for the final deficit.

Alabama State returns to action Sunday evening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome against LaGrange. Tip is set for 5:30 pm and is part of a doubleheader that day, with the game being carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
