MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Three players scored in double figures for Alabama State, but it wasn't enough as they came up short against UAB 62-47 in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon inside of Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
Jayla Crawford scored a team-high 13 points for Alabama State (1-8), while
Ayana Emmanuel and
Shmya Ward each scored 11 each in the loss.
Ward also grabbed nine rebounds for Alabama State, which finished the night shooting 39.1 (18-of-46) percent from the floor and 33.3 (4-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 50.0 (7-of-14) percent from the free throw line.
Meanwhile, Miyah Barnes led UAB (9-1) with 17 points while Katelynn Thomas added 16 and Deanna Kuzmanic added 15 points in the win. Trista Magee led the Blazers with a game-high 10 rebounds.
UAB ended the night shooting 39.7 (23-of-58) percent shooting from the floor and 17.4 (4-of-23) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 63.2 (12-of-19) percent from the free throw line, while winning the rebounding battle 41-30.
The Blazers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead to start the game, but Alabama State was able to chip away for the remainder of the first quarter and trailed 18-11 after the first stanza. The Lady Hornets were able to come back in the second half when they went on a 5-0 run to pull within 12 to end the third quarter.
UAB was able to pull away in the fourth quarter, although Alabama State cut the lead to as little as six.
Alabama State returns to action Tuesday night at 7 pm against Xavier in nonconference action.
