Alabama State hits the road for a pair of games this weekend

Hornets face Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State looks to end a four-game losing streak when they hit the road for a pair of games beginning Saturday against Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action.
 
The two will face each other with tip set for 4 pm.
 
Alabama State (3-18, 3-6 SWAC) is currently eighth in the conference standings at the halfway point of the season. The Hornets and Mississippi Valley State (1-21, 1-8 SWAC) met earlier this season with Alabama State claiming a 63-46 victory at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
 
In that contest, Branden Johnson and Fausto Pichardo combined for 29 rebounds in the win; with Johnson grabbing 15 and Pichardo a career-high 14 for the Hornets. Reginald Gee led Alabama State with 16 points, while grabbing six rebounds and recording a career-high four blocked shots; while Rodney Simeon added 12 off the bench and Jacoby Ross added 11.
 
Gee currently leads Alabama State in scoring at 14.5 points per game, a mark that has him seventh in the conference in that category. He is also second in free throw percentage at 83.0 (83-of-100) percent, and 10th in three-point field goal percentage at 37.4 (40-of-107).
 
Jacoby Ross is second on the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game and is eighth in the conference in field goal percentage at 43.8 (71-of-162) percent. He also leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage at 41.7 (35-of-84) percent, and is fifth in free throw percentage at 80.6 (54-of-67). Meanwhile, Branden Johnson leads the conference in field goal percentage at 64.4 (65-of-101) and is fourth in rebounding at 6.7 per game; while also ranking second in blocked shots.
 
Dante Scott leads Mississippi Valley State in scoring at 13.3 points per game.
 
The Hornets then face UAPB (8-15, 8-1 SWAC) Monday night with tip set for 7:30 pm in Pine Bluff (Ark.). The two faced each other earlier this season, with UAPB coming away with a 94-68 victory at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
 
Martaveous McKnight leads UAPB in scoring, and leads the conference, at 18.7 points per game.
