Hornets sweep season series with Alabama A&M with Saturday victory

Branden Johnson records double-double in victory

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Branden Johnson recorded his fourth double-double of the season to lead Alabama State to season sweep of Alabama A&M with a 69-50 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory at the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium Saturday night.
 
Johnson finished the night 14 points and 12 rebounds, including connecting on a season-best 54.5 (6-of-11) percent from the free throw line. He also finished with three blocks and connected on 80 (4-of-5) percent from the floor.
 
Tobi Ewuosho finished with 12 points, knocking down all four his shots from the floor, and Ed Jones finished with 11 points – all in the first half for Alabama State (6-18, 6-6 SWAC).
 
Alabama State finished the night shooting 50 (24-of-48) percent from the floor, including 52.4 (11-of-21) percent in the second half. The Hornets also 36.4 (4-of-11) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 58.6 (17-of-29) percent from the free throw line. Alabama State won the rebounding battle 40-29, and forced 21 Alabama A&M turnovers.
 
Alabama A&M (2-23, 2-10 SWAC) finished night shooting 38.3 (23-of-60) percent from the floor and the Bulldogs were held to just 6.3 (1-of-16) percent from beyond the arc. They also converted on just 23.1 (3-of-13) percent from the free throw line.
 
Andre Kennedy led the Bulldogs with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Arthur Johnson scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
 
Alabama State led the majority of the way, taking the lead on a three-pointer from Reginald Gee with 18:51 remaining in the first half and never relinquished that led for the remainder of the game. The Hornets outscored Alabama A&M 26-7 over the first eight minutes of the game, following the opening basket by the Bulldogs. Alabama A&M could get no closer than 11 points down the stretch as the Hornets pulled away.
 
The Hornets return to action Saturday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome against Southern on Alumni Night. The game is scheduled to tip at 5 pm, and will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
