MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State split on the second day of the Black & Gold Tournament at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex, winning the opener before falling in the nightcap.
After a five-run first inning, Alabama State was able to hold on for a 9-4 victory over Fort Wayne to open the day before falling behind and losing to Appalachian State, 6-1 in the nightcap.
In game one, Alabama State (3-2) scored early and often in the first after
Casey Durham scored the game's first run on a Fort Wayne fielding error. Kristen Gunter scored on bases-loaded walk to
Amira James to give Alabama State a 2-0 lead. The inning continued with
Hailey Walker scoring on a fielding error,
Marina Clark scoring on a passed ball and James on ground ball out for the 5-0 lead.
Fort Wayne was able to pick up a couple of runs in the third inning, before the Lady Hornets added four more in the sixth on a pair of hits.
Skyler Sullivan (1-0) came out the bullpen to pick up her first win of the season by going four innings and allowing two runs off of six hits. Gunter picked up three of the Lady Hornets' hits in the opener.
In game two, Alabama State fell behind early and couldn't recover as Appalachian State scored two runs in each the first, third and sixth innings.
The Lady Hornets got on the board in the sixth when Durham singled to third and brought Clark in for the lone run.
Charlene Castro got the loss for Alabama State on the mound.
Alabama State will play a pair of games on the final day of the tournament, facing Akron at 12 noon and Holy Cross at 2 pm.
