HOUSTON, Texas | With just four games remaining in the regular season, Alabama State finds itself in the midst of a race for a top seed in the upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament.
Alabama State (7-18, 7-7 SWAC) is currently tied with Jackson State for the sixth seed in the upcoming tournament and play the Tigers next week at home. They are also just one game behind third, which is held by this week's two opponents in Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern, with the top four seeds hosting the opening round of play on March 6.
Although there are four games remaining on the schedule, the Hornets have one focus – Prairie View A&M (11-17, 8-6 SWAC). The game tips off at 5 pm in Prairie View, and is a rematch of an 86-80 victory by the Panthers at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome earlier this season. In that game,
Reginald Gee – the Hornets' leading scorer – led Alabama State with 27 points, while
Tobi Ewuosho and
Jacoby Ross each added 10 in the loss.
Gee currently leads the Hornets, and is in the top 10 in the conference in scoring at 14.7 points per game. He is also fourth in the conference in free throw percentage (.802) and sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.386), while also sitting at 649 career points in his sophomore season. Meanwhile, Ross is second on the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game – just outside the top 10 in the conference – and is eighth in the conference in assists (2.3). He is also sixth in free throw percentage (.790) and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.391).
Branden Johnson leads the team in rebounding at 6.7 per game – third in the conference – and leads the conference in field goal percentage (.656). He is also second in the conference in blocked shots (1.5).
The game is set for 5 pm on Saturday and can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network, beginning with the pregame show at 4:45. The Hornets also venture to Texas Southern Monday, with a 7:30 pm tip scheduled.
