MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fell to Southern 7-4 in the final game of their Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series Saturday afternoon at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
Southern scored three runs in the first three innings, and started their scoring when Jazmine Dukes reached on a fielder's choice that brought home a pair of runs before she drove in another in the third on a squeeze to put Southern up 3-0.
After Southern extended their lead to 6-0, Alabama State (9-19, 1-2 SWAC) got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when
Amira James and
Hatty Shope scored off wild pitches, and got to within three when
Hailey Walker doubled to drive in
Charlene Castro.
The Lady Hornets scored their last run of the game in the sixth when
Vanessa Bradford drove in
Natalia Rivera with a sacrifice fly to center.
Justine Jean (3-5) suffered the loss for the Lady Hornets, working six innings and allowing seven runs off seven hits.
Skyler Sullivan came in to work the final inning in scoreless relief.
Alabama State returns to action Wednesday March 21 as they take on nationally ranked Auburn at Jane B. Moore Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm.
