BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Samford swept Alabama State in a midweek doubleheader Wednesday night, as the Lady Hornets fell 10-6 and 9-0 in non-conference action.
In the opener, Alabama State (5-16) jumped on top early with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Lady Hornets started the scoring when
Kaylee Davis was able to score on infield error before
Hailey Walker doubled home
Charlene Castro for a 2-0 lead.
Samford answered in the bottom half of the inning when Whitney Hinton scored on a wild pitch, before Lexie Higgins and Kelsey Royalty scored on a Kathryn Jackson double to left to give Samford a 3-2 lead. Each team scored a run each in the second inning for a 3-all tie before Samford was able to score three in the fourth and another three in the fifth to pull away for 10-3 lead.
Alabama State added three in the top of the seventh when Walker doubled to left center to score
Amira James and
Kristin Gunter to trim the lead to 10-5. They added another run when
Hatty Shope singled home
Taylor Rosser, but it wasn't enough as Samford held on for the win.
Walker went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Durham and Shope each added a pair of hits.
Skyler Sullivan (2-6) suffered the loss, working three innings and allowing six runs off of nine hits.
Justine Jean came out of the bullpen to work three innings and allowed three runs off of four hit.
In the nightcap, Samford scored five runs in the third inning to push their lead to 5-0 before the game was ended on a run-rule in the fifth inning.
Alabama State returns to action this weekend as they travel to Atlanta (Ga.) to compete in the HBCU Tournament, with their first game scheduled for Saturday morning against Savannah State.
