Hornets claim SWAC championship, earn bid to NCAA Tournament

Alabama State finished undefeated against conference competition in 2018

NEW ORLEANS, La. | Top-seeded Alabama State captured their third Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship in the last four years, and their second consecutive, with a 4-0 victory over Jackson State at the City Park Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
 
The Hornets clinched the doubles point after winning at number one when the team of Ion Efrim and Alexis Collard defeated Joan Sanson and Vishu Prasad 6-3; before the number three team of Chris Andre and Alejo Calvis claimed a 6-3 victory.
 
It took Alabama State (11-9) just a little over two hours to wrap up the entire match as Efrim claimed a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Sanson at number one singles, Tomas Fernandez claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fritz Jacobs, and Calvis defeated Vishu Prasad 6-1, 6-1. The win was the the school's third conference championship in their history, and second consecutive SWAC title. With the victory, Alabama State completed their undefeated run in conference play this season.
 
The Hornets earned four spots on the All-Tournament Team as each recorded three wins. Calvis was dubbed MVP with his fourth victory of the tournament on Sunday. Alabama State's trio of freshmen came up big throughout the season and in this tournament as Collard, Andre and Calvis combined for 10 of the Hornets' victories during the semifinals and championship. Efrim added an important win on Sunday to add his name to the list of all-tournament selections.
 
Alabama State head coach Anuk Christiansz doubled up on his Coach of the Year accolades for a second straight season, winning both the Women's Tennis and Men's Tennis Coach of the Year awards. Christiansz led the Hornets to a perfect mark in conference play before sweeping through the tournament.
 
Alabama State will now await its opponent in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, as the Selection Show airs May 1 on NCAA.com
