Alabama State looks to improve on 5-1 start in conference

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State looks to stay undefeated at home this season, facing Southern at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday night on "Soul Train Night."

Tip is set for 7:30 pm and can be seen on the Hornet Sports Network. The night will be festive as fans are encouraged to wear their best "Soul Train" inspired attire. Tickets are still available for the game at $10 general admission and $15 reserved.

An inside look at the Alabama State Hornets
  • Alabama State has started the conference season out 5-1 through six games for the second time under head coach Lewis Jackson since 2009. The Hornets finished 12-6 in the conference in their only other season starting at 5-1 (2014). The start is the second-best for Alabama State in conference play through six games, as the Hornets went 6-0 in 2009 and 2015.
  • Jackson currently sits at 194 career victories with the Hornets' win Saturday over Alcorn State, leaving him six wins shy of 200 for his career.
  • Reginald Gee leads Alabama State in scoring at 15.3 points per game, and has scored 981 points in his career after a 20-point performance against Alcorn State Saturday, the junior sits just 19 points shy of 1,000 career points, and has scored 19-plus points in three of the team's last four games.
  • Jacoby Ross has scored 592 career points midway through his second season as a Hornet. The sophomore is second on the team in scoring this year at 14.2 points per game.
  • Tobi Ewuosho has come off the bench to score in double figures in three of the last four games for the Hornets, including a season and career-high 17 points against Alcorn State. He also added eight rebounds and four steals. He is currently averaging 6.2 points per game (8.5 in conference play).
  • The Hornets are averaging 67.4 points per game through 17 games, and are averaging 71.8 points per game in six conference games this season. They are giving up just 64 points per game in conference play.
  • In their five home games this season, Alabama State is perfect and are averaging 78.0 points per game and allowing just 55.2 points per game. Gee is averaging 17.0 points per game at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome, while Ross is sitting at 14.0 points per game. AJ Farrar is just outside of double figures, averaging 9.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game at home.

An inside look at the Southern Jaguars
  • Eddie Reese leads Southern in scoring at 13.2 points per game in 16 games this season, shooting 45 (73-of-163) percent from the floor; while two other players are averaging in double figures.
  • Sidney Umude is averaging 12.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Jags this season through 20 games, while shooting 47 (100-of-211) percent from the floor. He is joined in double figures by Jayden Saddler at 10 points per game.
  • Southern enters the game with following a 68-62 loss on the road to Alabama A&M Saturday, and are currently tied for eighth in the conference with Alcorn State at 2-5. They are just percentage points behind Alabama A&M for seventh and a game back of Grambling State (3-4) for sixth in the conference race as the season approaches the midway point.

Inside the Series
  • Alabama State leads the all-time series 47-32, however, Southern has controlled the series in the last eight games.
  • The Jags have won six of the last eight games, including sweeping the season series last year by a combined six points. Southern won in Baton Rouge 63-61, before winning Montgomery 71-67 to complete the sweep.
  • Alabama State has a pair of wins in the last eight, a 79-65 victory in Montgomery (January 23, 2017) and a 77-68 victory in Montgomery (February 20, 2016).

What's Next
  • Alabama State hits the road to face defending conference champion Texas Southern Saturday, their first of two games in Texas next week.
  • The Hornets finish off the trip with Prairie View A&M, currently the leader in the SWAC, on Monday night.
