MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the road for the first time in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play Saturday against UAPB at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
The game is set to tip at 7:30 pm and can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network, beginning with the pregame at 7:15 pm.
Alabama State (4-9, 2-0 SWAC) opened the conference slate with back-to-back wins over Grambling State and Jackson State this past week. The Hornets are still in search of their first road win of the season, and picked up a road win last year in Pine Bluff (Ark.) when they defeated UAPB in the midst of three-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, UAPB (4-10, 1-0 SWAC) opened conference play with a 64-52 victory over Mississippi Valley State at home, and have been off since last Saturday.
A LOOK INSIDE THE ALABAMA STATE HORNETS
- Alabama State has won seven of their last 10 road openers in conference play, dating back to the 2009 season. The Hornets opened conference play on the road last season with a win over Mississippi Valley State, and their last loss to open up road play in conference came at the hands of UAPB in 2017.
- Alabama State has recorded six double-doubles as a team this season, with the latest coming against Grambling State when AJ Farrar and Reginald Gee each recorded one.
- The Hornets finished up non-conference play with the fourth-toughest schedule in the nation, and were picked to finish fifth in the conference during the preseason.
- Reginald Gee continues his assault on the Alabama State record book, having scored 907 career points in just 74 games. He currently averaged 14.2 points per game this season for Alabama State, playing in just 12 games after being selected as a preseason All-SWAC selection.
- Jacoby Ross leads Alabama State in scoring at 14.5 points per game, and has scored 529 points in just 39 games. He is also the reigning SWAC Freshman of the Year.
- Alabama State is in the top three in the conference in several categories, including leading the league in fewest fouls (234). They are second in blocked shots per game (3.5), fewest turnovers (207), and three-point field goal percentage (.347).
- The Hornets are in the top 85 in the nation in fewest fouls (54) and turnovers forced (81) through the first 13 games this season.
- Alabama State is one of four teams remaining undefeated in conference play.
A LOOK INSIDE THE UAPB LIONS
- UAPB is one four teams in conference play undefeated through the first weekend, although just playing one game – a 12-point victory over Mississippi Valley State.
- Martaveous McKnight is currently 11th in the nation, and leads the conference, in scoring at 23.5 points per game for the Lions.
- UAPB played the 19th toughest non-conference schedule in the country according the ESPN BPI rankings, one of four Southwestern Athletic Conference teams in the rankings.
- The Lions are currently undefeated at home this season, including a win over Mississippi Valley State, and have won nine of their last 13 games at home dating back to last season.
INSIDE THE SERIES
- Alabama State leads the series with UAPB 28-11, with the two splitting the last eight meetings – including last season.
- UAPB has the longest winning streak over the last eight games – winning three from January 2016 until January 2017.
- Alabama State swept the season series in 2015, while the Lions won the season series in 2016.
