@BamaStateMBB uses strong defensive outing to give Jackson 200th victory

NICEVILLE, Fla. | Three players scored in double figures for Alabama State and the Hornets held Chicago State to just one field goal in the first nine minutes to give head coach Lewis Jackson his 200th career victory with a 67-54 win at the Emerald Coast Classic Saturday morning.

Brandon Battle led Alabama State (1-6) with a career-high 14 points and added three rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of steals in the win. He was joined in double figures by Tobi Ewuosho with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Jacoby Ross added 11 off the bench. Leon Daniels added eight for the Hornets in their first win of the season.

The Hornets finished the day shooting 36.8 (21-of-57) percent from the floor and 23.8 (5-of-21) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 80 (20-of-25) percent from the free throw line and forced 28 Chicago State turnovers in the process.

Alabama State jumped on top of the Cougars with a 13-0 run to start the contest, using a defense that allowed just one field goal by Chicago State that came with 11:16 to play in the first half. The Hornets held Chicago State to just one field goal made in their 10 shot attempts and forced eight turnovers during that span.

After Chicago State answered with a run of their own in the second half to get the deficit to single digits, Alabama State forced five consecutive turnovers and pushed the lead back to 13 at 41-28 with 11:57 remaining in the contest.

Chicago State (3-6) was led by Andrew Lewis with 18 points, while Xavier Johnson added 12. The Cougars ended the day shooting 36.2 (17-of-47) percent from the floor and 14.3 (3-of-21) percent from beyond the arc. They also finished the day shooting 81 (17-of-21) percent from the free throw line.

Alabama State returns to action December 9 on the road for the beginning of a three-game road trip, facing South Dakota 7 pm. The game will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network, beginning with pregame at 6:45 pm.
