@BamaStateWBB welcomes Mississippi Valley State on Monday

Lady Hornets are currently tied for second place

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State looks to win its fifth consecutive home game in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play when Mississippi Valley State visits Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Monday at 5:30 pm.

The Lady Hornets (8-13, 7-3 SWAC) dominated Arkansas Pine-Bluff in a 72-53 win on Saturday evening. Ayana Emmanuel led the way with 16 points, while Shmya Ward recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds.  

The Devilettes (4-17, 3-7 SWAC) are coming off of a 78-70 road loss to Alabama A&M in which four players scored in double figures, led by Sydnie Ward (15 points).

BUZZWORTHY NOTES ABOUT THE LADY HORNETS
  • Ayana Emmanuel leads the Lady Hornets offense, averaging 13.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while Jayla Crawford is at 11.8 points.
  • Ward is averaging 10.3 points and snagging 7.6 rebounds per contest for the Lady Hornets.
  • The Lady Hornets boast the best field goal percentage, 44.5 percent, as well as the lowest opponent field goal percentage, 34.3 percent, among all SWAC teams in conference play.
 
SCOUTING THE DEVILETTES
  • The Devilettes are averaging 59.9 points per game while yielding 76.0 points per game.
  • LaKendra Bassett is leading Valley's offense at 11.0 points and 4.0 assists per game, followed by Kristy Parker with 10.5 points and 2.6 boards per game and Makayla Bonner at 8.3 points.
  •  MVSU is led defensively by Bassett hauling 5.6 rebounds per game, while Desiray Mosley averages 4.4 rebounds to go along with 6.8 points per game.
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
  • Alabama State fell short, 64-62, in the first meeting on January 14 in which the Lady Hornets had three attempts to tie or take the lead in the final seconds.
  • Crawford led all players with 19 points, while Ward finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
  • Alabama State continues their home stand when rival Alabama A&M comes to town on February 16. Tip is set for 3 pm inside of Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
