@BamaStateSB drops hard-fought game at Mississippi State

Lady Hornets fall 3-1, score first run in series history against Lady Bulldogs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fought valiantly against Mississippi State Wednesday night at Nusz Field before coming up short, 3-1.

Mississippi State (7-3) used the long ball to put away the Lady Hornets (5-4), belting a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and a solo shot in the top of the fifth. Casey Durham pushed Alabama State's lone score of the game across the plate in the fifth inning when the senior lined a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Kaitlyn Kilner. It was Durham's fourth RBI of 2019 and first sacrifice fly. The run also held significance as the first Alabama State run in five meetings between the two schools.

How it happened
Alabama State picked up its first baserunner in the top of the second when Hailey Walker reached first base via a strikeout and a passed ball, but the Lady Hornets were unable to take advantage of the miscue. Junior Justine Jean (six hits, three runs, two strikeouts) found her groove in the second inning, pitching three consecutive scoreless frames. Alabama State threatened in the fourth following a walk to Charlene Castro, with Amira James pushing Mississippi State hurler Candace Denis to a full count and Hailey Walker hammering a lineout to right field to end the inning. Jordan Amerson broke up Mississippi State's no-hitter in the top of the fifth with a sharp single up the middle followed by a Felices rope through the left side. The Lady Bulldogs answered Alabama State's run in the fifth with one in the bottom half for the game's final score.

Noteworthy
Junior Mackenzie Byrd made the most of her first at bat of the year, fighting back from 1-2 deficit to eventually earn a walk on seven pitches.

Castro walked for a team-leading seventh time this season. Castro struck out for the first time in 2019 in the sixth inning.

Amerson is currently riding a five-game hitting streak
