MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State finds itself in the midst of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship race with six games remaining, and they hit the road for a pair of key conference contests this weekend beginning with Alcorn State Saturday night.
Alabama State (10-13, 8-4 SWAC) finds itself just one game back of Texas Southern for second and three back of Prairie View A&M for first, however, they are also just percentage points ahead of UAPB in fourth and one game ahead of Grambling State in fifth.
The Hornets, winners of back-to-back games, have been off since last Saturday when they defeated Alabama A&M.
Inside the Alabama State Hornets
- Alabama State enters the game after winning back-to-back games in conference play over Mississippi Valley State and Alabama A&M.
- The Hornets look to win their third series of the season in SWAC play when they face Alcorn State, having defeated the Braves earlier this season at home. The other two series wins for the Hornets came over Mississippi Valley State and Alabama A&M.
- The Hornets had three players score in double figures in their last win over Alabama A&M, including a combined 30 from Leon Daniels and Tobi Ewuosho off the bench in the win. Daniels connected on four three-pointers, while Ewuosho added four steals.
- Reginald Gee continues to lead Alabama State in scoring at 14.3 points per game, and sits at 1,052 career points after hitting his 1,000th career point against Texas Southern on the road. The junior is shooting 43.4 (102-of-235) percent from the floor and 46.2 (43-of-93) percent from beyond the arc.
- Jacoby Ross is averaging 13.3 points and 2.3 assists per game for the Hornets, while shooting 35.3 (55-of-156) percent from beyond the arc and 82.6 (57-of-69) percent from the free throw line.
- AJ Farrar leads the team in rebounding off the bench, averaging 5.1 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 8.0 points per game for the Hornets.
Inside the Alcorn State Braves
- Alcorn State will be playing their final home games of the season this weekend, and enter the game having dropped their last three games. They have also dropped five of their last seven games this season.
- Maurice Howard lead the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game, and is shooting 39.7 (79-of-199_ percent from beyond the arc. He also just missed two free throws this season in 34 attempts.
- Troymain Crosby and Jonathan Floyd each average 11.5 points per game for Alcorn State, with Crosby averaging 5.2 rebounds per game.
Inside the Series
- Alabama State leads the all-time series with Alcorn State 44-37, with the Hornets holding a slim 5-4 advantage in the last nine games of the series after winning the previous meeting this year.
- The Hornets' win last season at home (on ESPNU) ended a three-game losing streak to Alcorn State, while Alabama State swept the season series in 2015.
